Fastpacking to Bainbridge Island | July 12-13, 2022

Destination

  • Fay Bainbridge Park, on Bainbridge Island, WA  

Difficulty Rating

  • Easy: running on roads/sidewalks/shoulders of roads to the park, one long uphill. Roads are quiet but watch for cars especially when the shoulder or sidewalk is narrow or nonexistent.
  • 7 miles, 630 feet of elevation gain from Bainbridge Island ferry terminal to Fay Bainbridge park

Noteworthy

  • Fay Bainbridge Park is right on the water and provides a delightful beach access point. Most campsites are not very private and are near volleyball courts and play fields. Some campsites are more secluded or you can glamp by booking a cabin. Campsites have a space for a tent, picnic table and a fire ring. There is a shelter by the beach. Potable water and trash service is available on-site. Firewood is for sale and showers are available in the campground bathroom. Campground host can answer questions.
  • Campsites at the park can be reserved 10 days in advance or there is a walk-up hiker/biker site.  
  • Ferry ride was $9.45 for 1 adult walk-on passenger (no vehicle) from Seattle. Tickets are only required when departing from Seattle; the ride back from Bainbridge Island to Seattle is free.  
  • Bus service is available. Board the 96 bus at the ferry terminal and exit at NE Torvanger Road and Sunrise Drive NE; walk approximately 1 mile north to Fay Bainbridge Park. Note for your return trip: bus stops along this route are not marked with Kitsap Transit signs, so just wait on the west side of this intersection for southbound travel back to the ferry terminal and flag down the bus.

Goldmyer Hot Springs, Middle Fork Snoqualmie River, WA | July 17-18, 2022

   Destination Pedro Camp from Dingford Creek trailhead, following Forest Service Road 56 (closed to vehicles; pedestrians and cyclists OK) along the north side of the Middle Fork Snoqualmie River. Pass the junction with the turnoff for Goldmyer Hot Springs, then follow the road to Hardscrabble Horse Camp to access the Dutch Miller Gap Trail #1030. The next day I had a reservation to soak at Goldmyer Hot Springs, accessible on foot from my campsite! The very rainy Middle Fork area rained on me so I camped in the rain at Hardscrabble Horse Camp, stopping short of Pedro Camp; I did venture a few miles down the trail to see the views after setting up camp. Difficulty Rating Moderate to Hardscrabble Horse Camp: approximately 8 miles on Forest Service Road 56 with 1500 feet of elevation gain, very runnable surface but a steady elevation gain, sometimes steep, after the Goldmyer Hot Springs junction. Noble Knob, Norse Peak Wilderness, Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest, WA | June 30-July 1, 2022

  Destination Noble Knob and George Lake, starting from Camp Sheppard outside of Enumclaw, WA, paralleling State Route 410 on the White River Trail #1199 to the Ranger Creek trail #1197, passing the Little Ranger viewpoint; onwards to the Dalles Ridge Trail #1173 then finally to the Noble Knob Trail #1184. Difficulty Rating Difficult: approximately 10 mile trail run (one device read about 9.5 miles, the other device read 10.2 miles) with nearly 4,000 feet of elevation gain Difficult: add on the 2-mile round-trip to George Lake which is much lower than Noble Knob but has its own campsites. Noteworthy Forest service roads to access Noble Knob via Corral Pass or Dalles Ridge shave off nearly all of the elevation gain but usually aren't open until mid- to late July due to snow levels.
